Ranking of the NBA’s 9 best dunks this season

Last season gave us a head-to-head for the NBA’s dunk of the year.

In a corner, Anthony Edwards baptized Yuta Watanabe with a baseline dunk that saw the then-rookie completely overpower the 6’9 forward in the air. In the other corner, Miles Bridges cocked the ball back as far as possible to score a tomahawk dunk on Clint Capela just after Capela rim-blocked his teammate. We asked readers which dunk they thought was better, and Bridges won 54 percent of the vote.

This year’s Dunk of the Year race doesn’t seem to have any overwhelming favorites. Instead, we believe there are at least nine dunks that could take the crown. With the regular season over, let’s look back at the best dunks of the 2021-2022 season. Vote for your favorite dunk this season below.

9. Aaron Gordon reverse alley oop

We know that Aaron Gordon is one of the best dunkers in the game, and this one is particularly impressive. The coordination it takes to catch the ball in the air while it’s running at full speed and still have the wherewithal to spin and dive is pretty ridiculous. This is not a poster but it is quite an amazing piece.

8. The Eastbay Boys: Jaxson Hayes, Obi Toppin, Greg Brown

I remember thinking I’d never see an underfoot dunk in a real game when LeBron did it in high school. Now we have 7-footers like Jaxson Hayes doing it in transition and Obi Toppin doing it twice in one season. My goodness.

My favorite of these is Jaxson Hayes, but they’re all wonderful.

7. Anthony Edwards on Gabe Vincent

Here’s a hot take for you: With apologies to Giannis, Anthony Edwards is the top straight athlete in the NBA. The No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA draft is a freight train who drives to the rim, and he proved it again with this dunk against Gabe Vincent.

6. Jaylen Brown on Maxi Kleber

Jaylen Brown had several great dunks this year, but this was our favorite. You know you’ve done something amazing when Kevin Garnett steps out of his front row seat to dab you.

5. LeBron on Kevin Love

LeBron obviously had another great singles year in the face of a Lakers season dumpster fire, but raise your hand if you didn’t know he can still stand up like that. LeBron not only turned back the clock to beat his former Cleveland teammate, but also toasted love after the game. Unfortunately for Bronald Sr., this is an all-time high for the Lakers this season.

4. Kyle Kuzma on Joel Embiid

Kuzma had a stellar year in his first season away from the Lakers. Joel Embiid might be the greatest, worst shot blocker alive, and Kuzma went up and dropped one on his head. This dunk was so good that Embiid decided not to jump with him later in the game.

3. Russell Westbrook on Rudy Gobert

The Lakers’ big Russell Westbrook experiment was an explosive failure, but Russ still had some vintage moments over the course of a lost year. None of them were better than that dunk on the triple DPOY. Russ probably wants to be Men in Black all season, but that dunk was a goalie.

2. Isaac Okoro on three rockets

My favorite part about this dunk is Okoro trying to figure out who to stare at after he lands. When you dive into three types, there is no easy answer!

1. Yes Morant about Jakob Poeltl

Poeltl had a case as the NBA’s top rim guard this season, but don’t tell Ja Morant that. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this dunk is that it wasn’t even Morant’s best game of the quarter. We still have no idea how he got off that buzzer beater minutes later.
