PSV Eindhoven 1-2 Leicester (agg 1-2): Foxes are in the European semi-finals for the first time

Pereira scored his first goal in European competition for Leicester

Ricardo Pereira struck a late winner as Leicester City staged a superb comeback to beat PSV Eindhoven in the Europa Conference League and reach the club’s first European semi-finals.

After a goalless first leg at King Power Stadium, Eran Zahavi ambushed an error from Youri Tielemans to score, but James Maddison equalized with 13 minutes remaining.

The Foxes midfielder shoved into the top corner after a clever cutback from Ayoze Perez before Pereira fired the winner in the 88th minute to seal a memorable victory.

They meet Roma winners against Bodo/Glimt, who lead 2-1 after the first leg.

Foxes fight back for historic victory

Maddison equalized with 13 minutes remaining

Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers had urged his side to make history and reach the club’s first European semi-final, but for 77 minutes it looked like they would take the opportunity against a PSV side that were more adventurous than in the first leg, miss.

It’s been a stunning season for Rodgers, but his moves at Philips Stadium prompted a rousing comeback.

Patson Daka, who came on at half-time, had already missed a great chance before substitute Perez Maddison selected and the midfielder hit home.

Then, with two minutes remaining, substitute Ademola Lookman found Daka and the striker’s shot was deflected down the run by right-back Pereira, who shot clean.

It’s been a decade of firsts for the Foxes, who won their maiden FA Cup last season and clinched a first top-flight title in 2015/16, and hopes of topping it off with a European trophy remain alive, albeit in the third. rank competition.

Victory in that competition could also be Leicester’s best chance of qualifying for Europe next season as they sit ninth in the Premier League and eleven points adrift of a Europa Conference League spot but have long seen it looks like the home team is on the way there.

Leicester were cautioned when Kasper Schmeichel tipped Mario Gotze’s well-placed volley over the bar but had golden chances of their own when Harvey Barnes broke free and shot wide despite Maddison’s support.

They were eventually punished when Tielemans passed the ball outside of his own box and Mario Götze put in a pass to Eran Zahavi, who fired from a tight angle in the 27th minute.

That made the tie a huge task for Leicester as PSV have gone unbeaten in 15 games and kept five clean sheets in their last six games under highly-rated boss Roger Schmidt, who will leave at the end of the season.

But it was a challenge Rodgers’ side was up to and those late goals showed the Foxes may have to struggle to go all the way in Europe.
